The City of Pula is the eight largest town in the Republic of Croatia; situated in the south of the Istrian peninsula and it is the largest town of the Region of Istria. City of Pula-Pola is situated with seven hills, population is around 52,411 inhabitants into 22,134 households.
The present area of the town is 5,165 ha, out of which the land takes 4,150 ha whilst the sea 1,015 ha. The climate is Mediterranean with an average insolation of 2,316 hours per year, average year temperature of the air 13.2º C (the average temperature ranging from 6.1º C in February to 26.4 º C in July and August) and temperature oscillation of the sea from 7 to 26 º C.
The history of Pula lasts more than 3,000 years, and the first urban history starts with the Roman Empire. During the Austro-Hungarian rule, Pula was the main basis of the Austrian War Navy, and in that period the town experienced demographic and social and urban expansion
The main economic branches are shipbuilding, processing industry, tourism, traffic, food industry, building industry and other no-metal production. The bases of the economic development of the town of Pula, traditionally the most developed economic centre of the Region of Istria, ware given by shipbuilding, nowadays known in the shipbuilding market worldwide.
Within the tourism branch, in the framework of Istria and Croatia, the town of Pula is one of the most interesting tourist towns. Favourable geographical position, turbulent history and numerous cultural and historical monuments have made Pula one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the east Adriatic. The town today has the modern base to receive national and foreign tourists: about ten hotels, two campsites, a few touristic apartment settlements and two marinas. Pula is nowadays recognisable as a desirable tourist destination and a modern festival town where the guests are glad to return.
The Pula Airport is situated north-east of Pula and is a national and international airport, becoming again a strong transport centre that breaks all records year after year. Nearby airports are Trieste, Rijeka, Ljubljana and Zagreb. The east branch of the Istrian Y connects Pula to the network of Croatian highways, whilst the west branch of that semi-highway connects Pula to the Slovenian highways, namely to the whole system of EU highways. The extension of the Istrian Y is being expanded to reach the full highway profile.
The town is best known for its well preserved ancient Roman buildings, the most popular being the amphitheatre dating back to the 1st cent A.D., the sixth largest in the world – the famous Arena. The construction of the amphitheatre began during the rule of Emperor Augustus, it was upgraded by Clauduis and completed by Vespasian, when it got its final form. This is one of the best preserved ancient amphitheatres, nowadays stage of Summer film festivals and various cultural events.
