Athens
Description
Athens is the historical capital of Europe, as from the Neolithic era until today it has never ceased to be inhabited. Along its long, fascinating history, the peak came in the 5th c. e.g. (the "Golden Age of Pericles"), when its values and culture went beyond the geographical limits of the city and acquired universal radiation. Political thought, theater, the arts, philosophy, science, architecture, and so many other forms of human intelligence reached their epic climax in a coincidence of time and spiritual consummation unique in world history.
Thus, Athens formed the matrix of Western civilization, while countless Greek words and concepts such as democracy, harmony, music, mathematics, art, gastronomy, architecture, logic, love, euphoria and hundreds of others enriched many languages and inspired different cultures.
Athens has been the capital of Greece since 1834. The Athens basin together with Piraeus has a population of approximately 3,5 million inhabitants.
The Center of the Greek Capital is located in the Municipality of Athens, which is the largest population in Greece and is currently administratively divided into seven municipal communities.
